Information Technology courses delivered in India

The Challenger TAFE experience

Challenger TAFE and the Somaiya Trust have formed a strategic alliance to deliver Australian Vocational and Technical Qualifications at the K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering in Mumbai, India.

Challenger TAFE is owned and operated by the Government of Western Australia to provide vocational education and training to local and international students. It is a part of a network of Western Australian TAFE colleges. Challenger TAFE has approximately 25,000 students, 1,000 staff, delivers 150 courses through 17 campuses and centres.

Somaiya Vidyavihar is a sprawling 60 acre campus in the heart of Mumbai, India. Founded in 1959, it is the largest educational campus in Mumbai. Somaiya Vidyavihar has 33 institutions, approximately 26,000 students and 1,500 teaching staff. It provides value-based education alongside quality pedagogy.

Somaiya Vidyavihar offers diplomas, undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programmes in the following disciplines:

  • Humanities
  • Engineering and Technology
  • Management
  • Medicine

Students can now complete an Australian Diploma of IT (Programming) in Mumbai. It is an 18-month Diploma commencing in September 2004. Students who have completed their year 12 will be eligible for this program. Students who are currently studying for their Bachelors degree can simultaneously pursue this Diploma.

Highlights of the Diploma of IT (Programming) delivered in India are:

  • Challenger TAFE is a Western Australian government owned and operated organisation
  • The Western Australian Trade Office is a representative agency of the Government of Western Australia and has a permanent presence at Nariman Point. Mumbai students and parents can visit the office to check the authenticity of the strategic alliance between Challenger TAFE and Somaiya Trust and the status of the Diploma offered.
  • Both Challenger TAFE and Somaiya have made a commitment to this long-term relationship and have plans to introduce many courses, the next one in February 2005.
  • Prof. Uday Joshi, Head of Computer Engineering and Information Technology Department spent two weeks at Challenger TAFE, Perth Western Australia, training for delivery of the Diploma to Australian Standards. He now has the Australian qualification that allows him to deliver the Diploma of IT to Australian Standards
  • Mr. Paul Dollery, Senior Lecturer, IT, Challenger TAFE, spent three weeks from 15 August 2004 to 3rd September 2004 at Somaiya Vidyavihar, Mumbai to train the Somaiya team of 12 lecturers in the IT department involved with the delivery to Australian standards, counsel prospective students and set up the Diploma of IT (Programming) course for delivery to Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) standard
  • Somaiya are in the process of setting up an Industry Advisory Board that will advise and approve the TAFE WA Diploma courses that Somaiya delivers. This ensures the courses delivered meet the industry requirement and graduates have a better chance of gaining employment, when the industry is aware of the training imparted and the value of the skills gained
  • The Challenger TAFE - Somaiya graduates will receive 'hands on' training and therefore will be 'job ready' when they graduate
  • Prospective employers can look forward to well trained information technology staff who are productive from day one
  • Graduates will not only have good technical skills, but also client relationship and project management skills
  • Successful graduates will receive a Challenger TAFE Diploma of Information Technology (Programming)
  • These graduates will then have the option of either entering the workforce in India, or if they wish to pursue further studies in Australia. They will receive advanced standing to enter the 2nd year of the three year Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology at the University of Notre Dame Australia.
  • A saving of more than Rs. 800,000 if students undertake their 18 month Diploma with Somaiya in India and two year Bachelor’s studies at the University of Notre Dame Australia

They are focused on targeting their training and employment services for the wider community including for diverse, and in many instances, disadvantaged groups.
